Pan Shots for B-Roll

filming tips Mar 24, 2023

Sometimes I only get a few seconds of good usable footage with someone talking at a party or event.

It always helps to have a bunch of different little filler content to add to a video even if it’s little 1 second clips showing different stuff.

Phones will usually have pretty good image stabilization to keep it from looking too shaky, so it’s pretty easy to get pan shots really quick.

B-Roll to switch to while you’re talking to a camera also breaks up the visual, which keeps everything more interesting for the viewer.

"  All right, if you ever have to make a video at an event, make sure you get some pan shots for your B-roll. So what that means is if you've got a camera that you just steady going left to right, right to left, you can get some really cool shots. This is especially useful if you're gonna use your words like, check this out cuz I was at a beautiful house with a pool and a bunch of awesome people.

That's one thing. But if I show you while I say it, the other day I was at a beautiful house with a pool and a bunch of awesome people and it just hits different right?"

Absolutely! Incorporating pan shots into your B-roll can add visual interest and enhance the storytelling in your videos. By smoothly panning the camera from one side to another, you provide your audience with a dynamic view of the environment or subject you're describing. It helps create a more immersive experience and allows viewers to visually connect with your narration. So, next time you're capturing footage at an event, remember to include some pan shots in your B-roll to make your videos more engaging and captivating.
