TRS to TRS cables will carry the microphone input to a Camera. If you use your iPhone as a camera, it’s not so simple.
The dongle on an iPhone is looking for input from a mic, and also sends its own output to headphones.
It used TRRS to do this. You’ll recognize TRRS by the 3 bands on the 3.5mm male connector.
Regular TRS cables you’ll find readily available at your local stores will only have 2 bands on them, and they won’t work for this.
The wire I used in this video instead of all that is actually $17 cause #inflation
Now’s where I shill my Amazon store page with that, and all the gear I geek out about. I’ll make a cut off any sales cause they think I’m dope like that:
" This is a super special little cord from Road. Now this little cable's called a trs to trs, which means it's got two little black bands on the ends, but then this one is A trs to A trrs, which means it has three bands on this side. Now here's why this would matter. If you plug in a mic, you're gonna use the trs connection.
But if you want it to go into your phone, it needs to be transferred from the single output mic to a mic and a headphone. So it's two-way communication. And for that, you need to have a dongle. Now when I plug in this dongle, you'll know that the mic is powered up, cuz you'll see the little light turn on.
I don't know if you care about these things, but I'm pretty pumped on this nice little sleek little gun handle thing and the ball mound, the black phone and all these cool things. But then I've got a dongle, I don't even like the word dongle. And then I've got this weird trs to trrs cable and all of that's kind of dumb looking, but you could just buy this for eight bucks on Amazon.
That's nice. So let's see how much different this looks. It's gonna perform exactly the same, but I don't have to say the word dongle anymore. So that part's amazing. And then we can plug in the mic here. I don't know why I care so much that there's just no a nice little black wire, but I'm happier. Here we go.
And not only that, but I also can easily turn this to the side. And now I've got a really nice rig for a vertical video as well. And if I really wanna be fancy, I can talk to the back facing camera and get a little selfie video right there as well. I'll see you tomorrow."
It's great that you found a solution that works well for your microphone setup and mobile recording. The TRS to TRRS cable and the dongle provide the necessary connections for two-way communication and compatibility with your phone. It's always satisfying to have a setup that meets your needs and preferences. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to chatting with you again tomorrow!
