It’s not about YOU

filming tips Feb 28, 2023

I was asked to write a few things about myself in the Deep Dive section of the community newsletter (not to be confused with Alex’s, aka NFT_GOD’s newsletter).

I wanted to leave readers with this takeaway: People show up so that they can benefit.

“What’s in it for me?”

That’s a great perspective to look at your content from. If you were a reader or viewer, or an NFT Collection Community member… what’s in it for you?

People like to talk about themselves, and that’s ok. Let em! They’ll love you for it. But when you create a piece of content, make no mistake: They are not consuming it for you, but for themselves.

If you can’t think of one thing they get out of it, maybe rethink why you’re making that content, and what you intend for the consumer of it.

"  It's not about you. People show up for themselves, not for you. So give them a reason to show up. Use your voice for things you actually believe in, and if you're brave, do it on video. Give them something of value before you talk about yourself or your ambition. And maybe they'll become interested in you after that.

By the way, I'm Chris and I make videos. That was a little opener for the 1% Better Club community newsletter. It's kinda hard to say. Alexander reached out, he asked if I'd write something about myself, and I didn't wanna just start off by being like, Hey, I'm Chris. Listen to all these things about me. So I hope that that could provide a little bit of value for people that want to make content.

It's always about the viewer. Put yourself in their shoes and just ask yourself, if I were watching this video, would I be getting something out of it? Would I be learning something that I can use and go benefit from? Or am I laughing or am I being entertained? Because if you're just sitting listening to somebody talk about themselves, it's boring.

And actually everybody wants to leave that situation, and they do. And it's super easy. They just swipe away and they're off of your video. So if you're gonna make videos, just keep in mind, it's for the viewer. It's not about you. Okay, see you tomorrow."

That's a great perspective, Chris. When creating content, it's important to prioritize the needs and interests of the viewer. Providing value, whether it's educational, entertaining, or informative, should be the focus. By offering something of value before talking about yourself or your ambitions, you're more likely to engage and retain viewers. Understanding the viewer's perspective and considering what they would find interesting or beneficial can help create compelling content. Thanks for sharing your insights, and I'll see you tomorrow!
